Streamlining Operations for Global Reach!

As a leading provider of aircraft and aviation operating solutions, our client manages a complex ecosystem encompassing aircraft, crew, charters, maintenance, and more. They serve major airlines globally, ensuring seamless operations across diverse time zones and business needs. However, their legacy Operational Data Store (ODS) presented significant challenges hindering their ability to deliver optimal service.

Here's Where the Challenges Came In

01

Concurrency and real-time issues

The existing ODS struggled with concurrent processing, making handling real-time data updates necessary for smooth operations difficult.

02

Siloed data

Data resided in six separate legacy databases within the ODS, hindering comprehensive analysis and insights.

03

Time zone inconsistency

Operating in EST created challenges for global clients relying on standardized time zones within the cargo airline industry. Inconsistent time zones could lead to confusion regarding takeoff and landing times, real-time reports, and overall communication.

04

Limited accessibility and security

Internal and external business users lacked secure online access to crucial reports for informed decision-making.

05

API constraints

Existing APIs lacked reusability, security, and robust access controls. This hampered communication between systems and limited efficient data sharing.

These limitations hampered the client's ability to provide seamless service, generate real-time insights, and optimize operations for a global clientele. They sought a comprehensive solution to address these challenges, paving the way for a more efficient and client-centric future.

We Understood the Critical Role Data Plays in Our Client's Success

To address their challenges, we delivered a comprehensive solution that modernized their data infrastructure and streamlined operations. Here's how we did it:

Building a unified data landscape

Data modeling: We created a comprehensive data model visually representing how all six legacy databases interacted. This visualization proved invaluable in determining how data would be stored, retrieved, shared, and updated within the new system.

Data source migration: We migrated various applications running on Oracle and MySQL databases to the Enterprise Operational Data Store (EODS). These applications included:

  • AIMS (Flight and crew scheduling)
  • CMS (Catering Management System)
  • RampView (Ground Task Management)
  • Trax (Aircraft maintenance)
  • Middleware (Temperature readings)
  • Sable (Weight and Balance Management)

Addressing integration issues

Replacing legacy tools
We transitioned the client away from SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and IBM MQ Middleware, which were causing dependency and concurrency problems.

Striim integration
We implemented Striim data replication pipelines to migrate data from the old ODS to the EODS with greater efficiency. This included handling complex primary key transformations across tables within each application and addressing issues like data duplication and unique key patterns. For instance, we tackled the intricate primary key structure of the AIMS application, ensuring smooth data migration despite its unique set of insert, update, and delete operations.

Standardization and scalability

Replacing legacy tools: We transitioned the client away from SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and IBM MQ Middleware, which were causing dependency and concurrency problems.

Expanding data sources: We incorporated approximately 250 new tables into the EODS to cater to the client’s operational reporting needs for Tableau dashboards.

Enhanced data accessibility and security

Modernized APIs

We developed over 200 new APIs using .NET to facilitate seamless data connection, movement, and transformation between various sources. This replaced their previous API structure, which lacked reusability and security

Secure online reporting

We transitioned from SQL Server Reporting Services to Tableau, enabling the creation of interactive and secure online dashboards. This involved wireframing dashboards, identifying key performance indicators (KPIs), and ensuring clear data visualization for informed decision-making.

Data security and backup

We implemented robust backup procedures to prevent data loss and thoroughly validated the accuracy of all integrations and reports after repointing data to the new EODS.

The Impact of Our Solution Went Beyond Simply Modernizing the Client's Data Infrastructure:
Here's how it transformed their business:

0 1

Real-time visibility

Striim data pipelines reduced data latency from 20 minutes to a mere 2-6 minutes. This real-time data availability empowers the client to promptly address operational issues and confidently make data-driven decisions.

0 2

Enhanced performance

Migrating from the legacy ODS to the EODS significantly improved database performance. This translates to faster processing times and smoother operations across all departments.

0 3

Improved decision making

The combination of real-time data and user-friendly Tableau dashboards provides crucial insights for informed decision-making at all levels of the organization.

0 4

24/7 support

Indium's global maintenance support for Striim ensures uninterrupted data flow and minimizes downtime, guaranteeing the client's continued success.
