What is JSON-RPC, and why is MCP based on it?

In simple terms, JSON-RPC is a way for two computer programs to talk to each other using plain text in JSON format. One program (the client) asks another program (the server) to do something, like run a function or give data, and the server sends back a response.

It’s called “RPC” (Remote Procedure Call) because it lets one program call a function on another computer, just like calling a local function.

The server runs as a web service (either local or remote) and communicates over HTTP using Server-Sent Events (SSE). This allows tool servers to live entirely in the cloud or another machine. MCP encodes requests and responses using structured messages, usually JSON, regardless of the transport type. This means that all components communicate using the same standardized protocol, whether a file reader running locally or a cloud-based analytics tool.
