The Moment I Knew My Worth

A story from Sandhya Swaroop, Data & AI Practice
There’s a particular kind of confidence that no job title or designation can give you. It doesn’t come wrapped in a promotion email or announced in a team meeting. It arrives quietly, in the middle of a hard day, when you realize you’ve already become someone you once hoped you could be.
For me, that moment came during a customer engagement early in my career at Indium.
The customer was building something that mattered at scale, digitizing supply chains for thousands of small retailers across emerging markets, making sure the right goods reached the right shelves, faster and smarter than traditional distribution ever could. The data behind that kind of operation doesn’t sit still. It moves, it grows, and it demands decisions in real time.
When I first stepped into that project, I was on my own. No safety net of a senior colleague to defer to. No playbook. Just me, the work, and a stream of requests that never seemed to stop. Multiple stakeholders. Tight deadlines. Everyone needed something, and they needed it now.
I won’t pretend it wasn’t overwhelming, because it was.
But what I had, and I didn’t fully appreciate it then, was a workplace that didn’t flinch at giving me that responsibility. Indium didn’t hold me back behind layers of approval or wait until I had a certain number of years behind my name. They put real work in front of me and trusted that I could handle it. That kind of organizational faith is either paralyzing or galvanizing. For me, it became fuel.
And so, I made a choice, quietly and repeatedly, to not let the pressure become paralysis. I learned to prioritize without guilt. To ask the right questions before diving into the wrong answers. To deliver quality not because someone was watching, but because my name was on the work.
Slowly, something shifted.
The customer didn’t just accept my outputs. They started asking for me specifically. Not just for routine tasks, but for critical data decisions. For rooms where things mattered. That kind of trust is rare. And when it comes, it doesn’t feel like applause. It feels like recognition. Like someone holding up a mirror and showing you who you’ve quietly become.
What I’ve come to understand is that Indium created the conditions for that mirror to exist. It’s a place where the culture doesn’t just tolerate ambition in women, it makes space for it, without fanfare. Where being part of the Data & AI practice means you’re expected to think, not just execute. Where no one pulls you aside to question whether you belong in a high-stakes room. You’re simply put in the room and trusted to show up.
That’s what changed everything for me.
To every woman navigating tech, especially those doing it without a roadmap, without a team around them, without anyone to tell them they’re on the right track:
Find the place that bets on you before you’ve proven everything. And then prove everything anyway.
The work speaks. Keep going.
Your competence is building even when no one is noticing. Your judgment is sharpening even when no one is asking. And one day, in a meeting or a message or a quiet moment at your desk, you’ll realize: they need me here. Not because you fought for visibility, but because you showed up fully, every single time.
That’s the confidence that lasts.
